Dementia Action Week takes place week beginning 19th May, and this year’s theme is ‘Start the Conversation – Make a Difference’.

Gloucestershire Libraries is committed to raising awareness about dementia, and the following libraries will be showcasing Reading Well for Dementia books throughout May:

Cheltenham, Gloucester, Stroud, Cirencester, Tewkesbury, Bishop’s Cleeve, Charlton Kings, Up Hatherley, Quedgeley, Coleford, Dursley and Stow.

It has been proven that music (and poetry) really make a difference and that is why many of our county libraries are now Playlist for Life Help Points. Personally meaningful music can stimulate memories and transport us back to important places and moments in our lives. Extremely powerful!

Many of our Share a Poem groups and Over 60s’ Social Groups will be running Playlist activities throughout May. It’s important to compile your Playlist now, so why not join us?

One powerful title which emphasises the power of music and song is Simon McDermott’s The Songaminute Man: How Music Brought My Father Home Again. A truly moving memoir.

Our three Library Choirs complete the icing on this musical cake. If you like singing, why not come along?

All in all, lots of information, help and advice available about living with dementia. And lots of music-themed conversations and dementia-friendly activities that will make a difference!

I’m from Playlist for Life and I’ve just taken a call from a woman who wanted to order a copy of our 100 years book (we are always happy to calls like this!). I was asking how she had heard about it and she was telling me that she was in Stonehouse Library and while she there noticed there was a community group event and was encouraged to join in. She told me they were using the 100 years book, and a staff member was naming bands and the group were guessing the name of the song, which she told me she really enjoyed. She took away one of our leaflets and was telling me that she doesn’t have dementia but really enjoyed reminiscing through the music. We want everyone to make their playlist or to take part in activities like this regardless of if they have dementia or not, so I was really pleased to hear about it.
